When to Go
January to April fall within the sporadic wet season. An avid traveller can expect reasonably light rain showers and sunshine with some phenomenal views of the Kenya’s drop-dead gorgeous landscapes of the Great Rift Valley (Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru & Naivasha) and a dense wildlife therein, amidst an iffy but reasonable weather patterns.
Having said that, if you are considering saving a bit of cash and still have an extended wonderful time, then this is the best season for you to travel over.
This is because, these months falls within low season as far as the tourism calendar and hotel/Lodge/Camp bookings are concerned.
May through June, and occasionally November through December tend to be pretty wet. Therefore, perhaps not the best time to travel to certain parks, beaches or participate in water-intensive activities. Because, when it rains, it does pour torrentially. However, if the weather patterns in the recent years are anything to go by, the rains have tarried widely within intervals, thus, creating pockets of dry spells. In fact, the renowned Wildebeest migration have started out of the left field, arriving in the Maasai Mara early June instead of July!
July to October are the ultimate picture-perfect time to travel to kenya. These months are simply characterized by superbly warm and dry weather conditions for coastal safari holidays and game viewing experiences across the Kenyan parks, reserves and conservancies.
Notably, these months fall within the period when over a million herds of Wildebeests and other wildlife drift into the kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve from the Tanzanian’s Serengeti National Park. That means, there is usually high influx of ravelers/holiday-makers who frequent kenya’s tourist landmark destinations, creating a peak to high season.
Transit Options
As a traveller visiting Kenya, you will likely jet-in through various local airports, besides the Nairobi’s main international hub, the Jomo Kenyatta Airport, JKIA. Unless of course, you fancy an adventurous overland entry from the boarder point countries of Uganda in the west, Tanzania in the south or Ethiopia on the North.
Once in this country on the Equator, you will have a litany of options to be transferred to your preferred destination. You might opt for a faster and uneventful option of flying through scheduled and chartered flights to the Coastal region ( Mombasa), the Great Rift region ( Maasai Mara, Nakuru, Eldoret, Naivasha) Mount Kenya region ( Ol Pejeta, Ol Jogi, Solio, Mt Kenya ) or the Lake Base region ( Kisumu, Kakamega, Busia ).
Alternatively, there is an elaborate road transport network to the very destinations of choice aforementioned. These include, rides in the specially custom-made open-top latch safari and 4×4 heavy duty vehicles. Otherwise, should you be traveling specifically to the pleasantly breezy coastal region, then, you should try a hike on the traffic-free, the Madaraka express train, aka SGR.
Safari Gear
Whereas Tented Camps and Lodges in and around the Parks are mostly self-sufficient and largely eco-friendly with strict ban on plastic bags usage.
We advise that you bring along a few personal effects at the very least, but also wise to travel light because of limitation on luggage weights on most local flight transfers up to 15kgs Max.
Indeed, going on a bucket-list that is African safari adventure, imply that you keep those intimate memories to last a millennia. What is the best way of doing this than bringing along a pair of binoculars and most certainly, quality camera reinforced with zoom lenses, and back-up batteries to ensure you etch special moments of your Safari.
Kenya, like other East African Countries is near the equator, therefore the sun is at peak when the weather is sweltering, thus wear light and comfortable. However, the early mornings and late evenings are particular chilly therefore bring right clothing for this and a light waterproof garment for any unexpected deluge.
Consequently, you ought to bring your cool sunglasses, “Safari Hat”, sunscreen, sturdy walking pair of shoes, your most needed personal effects like medication if need be, and mosquito repellents. A swimming costume will become handy for a dive in the camp’s pool, hot on the heels of a thrilling game drive.
I dare say though, you should bring along a nice book when use of internet in the African Savannah is no longer sensible nor desirable.

AFRICAN EXPERIENCE
“Africa is mystic; it is wild; it is a sweltering inferno; it is a photographer’s paradise, a hunter’s Valhalla, an escapist’s Utopia. It is what you will & it withstands all interpretations. It is the last vestige of a dead world or the cradle of a shiny new one. To a lot of people, as to myself, it is just home.” -Beryl Markham
